This module explained about the services that are commonly provided in a building, such as fire protection system, vertical transportation system, mechanical air-conditioning system and electricity generation and supply system. Besides that, we also learned about the basics requirements, Uniform Building By-Law (UBBL), planning, coordination and installation of these services. Throughout this module, I think that shear force diagram and bending moment diagram is the hardest topic. Some calculations are needed to make before the diagram can be drawn. I often have some problems in solving the calculations so I cannot get the bending moment diagram. Our lecturer, Mr. Chai Voon Chiet, told us that it is hard to draw a bending moment diagram without calculations unless a person is experienced.
For our midterm test, we are tested on the first chapter which is introduction to engineering principles and structures. It was divided into two parts which are theory and calculations. In the calculation part, I have forgotten to times the design load (1.4GK+1.6QK) to the dead load and imposed load at last. Thus, I have gone half of the marks from the calculation part. I will learn from my mistakes and will not let myself repeat again.
The group assignment is related to the straw bridge design. Each group consists of 4 to 5 members. At first, we researched on the types of bridge design that are available nowadays. Then, we have chosen warren subdivided truss bridge as the choice of our straw bridge design with supporting reasons. After testing our straw bridge design, our ratio is only 13.79. The main failure of our bridge is the join connection between the truss members have broken. Some of our classmates can achieve the ratio at 24 something. As we can see that, the bridge they construct is really efficient.
Last but not least, I think this module is the hardest module among the five modules. This is because physics are relating to this module and I am not interested in physics as well. Nevertheless, I will still try my best to get good results in the final exam.
