This module covers the measurement of sewerage works, surface water drainage, bored piles, water reticulation, renovation and demolition works and various elements of external works. Besides that, we also learned the introduction on the principles of specification writing, form of specification writing and their uses for the various trades throughout this module. Among these topics, I found that the subtopic surface water drainage is the hardest topic for me as I need to identify carefully the drawings before calculations are made. Thus, our lecturer, Sr. Chang Khong Thong always advice us to spend some times to read the drawings carefully before we start doing our calculation. In this topic, there is also a lot of items need to be measured which include brick drains, sump and pipe culvert.
In the beginning of the every lecture, our lecturer explained on the SMM II clauses which needed to apply to that day’s topic and the sample specifications relate to every topic. After that, he always gives us time to study the drawings related to the topic before proceeding to the teaching process on calculations. He likes to ask questions during lecture so that he can know the parts we do not understand and explained to us that part in details.
For our mid-term test, we are tested on the calculations on brick drains and rewrite the description based on SMM II clauses. In this mid-term test, we are required to write taking off list, bills of quantities and SMM II clauses. The SMM II clauses needed to write in taking off list so that we are able to know the items we measured are related to which clauses.
Other than that, our group assignment required us to measure all the elements we learned before from the previous semesters and this semester as well. In this assignment, we have chosen a unit of intermediate terrace house at lot 8432, Jalan Lebuh Kangar, Mukim Kapar, Daerah Klang, Klang Bandar Diraja, Selangor Darul Ehsan to measure. This assignment helps me to do revision as I need to recall back those chapters taught by the lecturers. In addition, I have also consulted my lecturer about the difficulties I faced when doing this assignment. In this assignment, we are required to prepare a proper tender document that provide us with knowledge and experience in preparing a tender document in the future.
In conclusion, I think Measurement 4 is quite hard as it requires us to have total understandings about the drawings before we do any calculations. It is also very important for us so I will spend more time to study this subject in order to score well in final exam.
